Fossil collecting field trip
Meet at 11:00 AM
Spend the daysearching for 350 million year old fossil ferns from the Carboniferous Era that are preserved in excellent condition. Suggest you bring protective eye ware, rock hammer, chissel, carring bag or wheeled cart, lunch and plenty of water. Directoins will be sent to those that RSVP.
In September 2005, Dr. Stewart B. Nelson led an Explorers Club Flag Expedition that re-discovered the mostly forgotten Nautilus. The Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans Arctic Submarine Expedition of 1931 is certainly worthy of being remembered. Among the civilian crew of his submarine Nautilus was diver Frank Crilley, a holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and scientist Harald Sverdrup who would later become director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in Dr. Charles Branas: Associate Professor of Epidemiology, Center for Clinical Epidemiology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
This Urban Sustainability Forum will explore the intersection of safety and land use. Playgrounds, abandoned buildings, and well-maintained recreational parklands all variously impact individual and community safety across Philadelphia’s neighborhoods. Even in neighborhoods where crime statistics are the lowest, because of vacancies, broken sidewalks and poor lighting the perception may be that those neighborhoods have higher crime rates than they actually do. The panelists will address the research associated with safety as it relates to land use and current efforts that are underway to enhance the quality of life. Dr. Sylvia Earle, one of the world's most respected Oceanographer's and Marine Conservationist shall be discussing her latest book: "The World is Blue: How are Fate and the Oceans Are One". Dr. Earle will speak about her book, latest research and show a short film. A VIP reception for Explorer Club and Academy of Natural Sciences Board members begins at 5:30. Reception for the public is 6:30-7:00 PM. Following the program Dr. Earle will be availble for a book signing in the lobby.

Subject: The Secrets of Priest's Grotto
In the spring of 1943 Ukrainian jews were less with no safe place left to hide, except perhaps below ground - in a cave. This is the story of how several families chose this option, and fought to survive during one of the darkest times in history. Faced with isolation, sensory deprivation and the constant threat of starvation, each of them adapted quickly to their hostile new environment. They built lanterns from old bottles, gathered water from the cave’s lakes and defended their entrance against the Nazis with their lives. In the end, they never relented in defense of their underground fortress.
This talk by American caver Chris Nicola FR'04 includes photos from Nicola National Geographic Adventure magazine sponsored 2003 expedition, as well as from those of subsequent visits; bringing the audience up to date new discoveries over the past seven years, and the development of a feature film and documentary, as well as the creation of a special museum exhibit near Priest's Grotto Cave.
Following the lecture, Nicola will sign copies of his book, THE SECRET OF THE PRIEST'S GROTTO.

New York- and San Francisco-based photographer Richard Barnes has a fascination with natural history exhibits. His behind-the-scenes photographs are beautifully haunting reminders that there is nothing natural about a natural history museum. Animal Logic, the recently published mid-career survey of his work, looks critically at both the natural world and the ways in which people attempt to institutionalize and classify nature within museums. Through his lens, sights and objects normally hidden from public view—half-installed dioramas, exploded skulls, and taxidermied animals in shipping crates—take on a strange beauty. Animal Logic will be available for purchase at the event.

Program: Diving the WILHELM GUSTLOFF
In May of 2003 a team of American and English divers led by Mike Boring of Chester, Virginia led a US/UK/Polish technical diving expedition to explore the site of history's greatest maritime catastrophe, the shipwreck of the WILHELM GUSTLOFF, a Nazi refugee ship overcrowded with Germans and their allies fleeing the vengeful Soviet army. In the closing months of WW II, the ship was torpedoed and sunk in the icy Baltic Sea with the loss of nearly 10,000 souls. The team faced many daunting physical challenges in diving and photo-documenting this icon of WW II history in the deep and frigid waters of the Baltic. These obstacles were matched only by the difficulty in navigating the obstreperous Polish bureaucracy in seeking permission to conduct the first expedition to explore the ghostly remains of this shipwreck..
